London on a budget: a 3–5-day itinerary

Three days cover the essentials; five give you space to slow down. This route groups nearby sights so you spend less time crossing London. Most suggested walks and permanent museum collections are free; meals, transport and special exhibitions are separate.
Day 1: Bloomsbury, Covent Garden and Westminster
Start with a booked visit to the British Museum’s permanent collection. Pick a few galleries rather than trying to see everything. Walk towards Covent Garden, then Trafalgar Square and Westminster, stopping for lunch along the way.
Cross Westminster Bridge for views of Parliament, then stroll part of the South Bank. The walk is free; entering ticketed attractions is optional. Smart Russell Square makes a convenient Bloomsbury base.
Day 2: Kensington Gardens and the museums
Walk through Kensington Gardens and Hyde Park. Then head to South Kensington for either the Natural History Museum or Science Museum. Check free-entry booking requirements first; paid exhibitions and experiences are optional.
Choose one museum to avoid rushing. Smart Hyde Park Inn and Smart Hyde Park View are useful bases for west London; their kitchens let you prepare a meal instead of eating out every time.
Day 3: Camden and Regent’s Park
Explore Camden Market without feeling you have to shop. Set a food budget before browsing the stalls; prices vary. Follow public paths towards Regent’s Park and, if energy and daylight allow, Primrose Hill.
Smart Camden Inn suits travellers who want Camden’s markets and music nearby. Check event tickets separately; a free daytime walk does not make every evening venue free.
Day 4: Notting Hill and a slower afternoon
Add Notting Hill and Portobello Road if you have a fourth day. Market activity varies by day, so check before travelling. Leave the afternoon for a park, café or an attraction you missed.
Stay in the same part of London rather than filling the day with distant stops. A rainy afternoon is a good opportunity to return to a museum.
Day 5: the river and your departure buffer
Walk a manageable stretch of the South Bank towards Tower Bridge, or visit a permanent gallery collection. Choose your start and end points around your luggage and airport journey.
Do not put a ticketed attraction immediately before your flight. Allow for luggage collection, airport transfers and disruption; check the airline’s recommended arrival time.
Keep the budget realistic
Budget separately for your bed, food, local travel and airport tickets. Walk between nearby sights, use the same contactless card or device for TfL journeys, and check the relevant fare caps. Airport services can have different rules.
Permanent museum collections can be free while exhibitions cost extra. Compare current room prices for your dates rather than relying on a fixed daily total. Our airport guide and hostel pages help you plan the rest.
