Christmas in London on a budget

Christmas lights, winter walks and a hot drink with new friends: London can feel festive without an expensive itinerary. Base yourself in Bayswater, Bloomsbury or Camden and choose a few nearby highlights. Check seasonal opening times and tickets before you go; the photograph shows an earlier Regent Street display.

A free evening under the Christmas lights

Follow the seasonal displays around Oxford Street, Regent Street and Carnaby Street, then add Covent Garden if you have time. Looking at the street lights costs nothing; shopping, food and paid attractions are optional. Check Visit London for the current display arrangements.

Smart Russell Square is a useful Bloomsbury base for central London outings. Plan your return before setting off, wear warm layers and allow time for busy pavements.

Hyde Park and Winter Wonderland

Stay at Smart Hyde Park Inn or Smart Hyde Park View for a Bayswater base near Kensington Gardens and Hyde Park. A park walk is separate from admission to Winter Wonderland.

Winter Wonderland requires a pre-booked entry ticket for your chosen date and arrival time. Attraction tickets do not replace entry tickets, and rides, food and experiences can cost extra. The event is closed on Christmas Day; check the official ticket guide before booking.

Festive markets and Camden discoveries

Browse Camden Market from Smart Camden Inn and set a food budget before exploring the stalls. The market is closed on Christmas Day; individual traders can have different hours.

For another outing, check the Southbank Centre Winter Market’s seasonal programme. Combine it with a riverside walk rather than trying to cross the whole city in one evening. Verify opening dates with the venue.

A warm indoor stop in Bloomsbury

The British Museum’s permanent collection is free to visit on open days, with advance booking recommended. It is close to Smart Russell Square, but is closed from 24 to 26 December.

Leave room for a relaxed afternoon rather than filling every hour. Check opening times for museums, cafés and restaurants; normal weekly schedules may not apply over Christmas.

Christmas Day: plan transport and meals ahead

Do not assume the Tube, TfL buses, Elizabeth line or DLR will run on 25 December. TfL’s Christmas travel page lists the available alternatives, including taxis, private hire and some coach services. Confirm your specific journey and book ahead where needed.

If flying into Heathrow, Stansted, Gatwick or Luton, check the airport transfer operator’s festive timetable before booking. Arrange meals in advance and keep a walkable plan near your hostel. Services on Christmas Eve, Boxing Day and New Year can also change.
